Court Drops Arrest Warrant for Seng Sary

Phnom Penh: The Phnom Penh Municipal Court has decided to drop all charges and cancel an arrest warrant for Seng Sary, a day after a request from Prime Minister Hun Sen. In the letter dated Tuesday 21 September, the Investigating Judge, Nhim Pisal, confirmed that the charges of conspiracy and incitement to cause serious disturbance to social security had been dropped and the arrest warrant dated 5 August had been withdrawn.

The dropping of Seng Sary's arrest warrant came after Prime Minister Hun Sen posted on his Facebook page asking the court to stop the action, saying that Seng Sary's recent comments were acceptable. He also urged Seng Sary to continue his research and analysis of social issues “for the benefit of social science research”.

In late July this year, Seng Sary wrote on his own Facebook page that there are six major political forces that could change Cambodian politics: pro-opposition forces, citizen forces, youth forces and internal forces within the ruling party, as well as the armed forces and international forces. It was last Friday that the Prime Minister warned about the arrest of Seng Sary, saying he thought his post on Facebook was in support of the anti-government movement.
